Urgent action needed for Iraqi Refugees in Rojava (May 4)

Escaping from the ISIS-occupied territory in Iraq, 1200 Iraqi refugees on May 4 crossed into Rojava, northern Syria, where they are placed in multiple refugee camps all founded by local civil society organizations. The Iraqi refugees started to head toward Rojava since late April 2016 – the number’s now reached 5000 Iraqis, mainly women and children, and they have all suffered from terrorist threats while fleeing their occupation.

The route taking refugees into Rojava has since been secured by border units from the People’s Defense Units (YPG) and the Women’s Defense Units (YPJ) along with Asayish security forces. The civil organizations in Rojava however have faced lack of enough resources to help the refugees. Sozdar Hisên, co-director of Hawl Refugee Camp says water, food and medicine are desperately needed to recover the refugees from long days of walking and dehydration, “the camp that we ourselves have made now need to be extended due to the growing number of incoming refugees, and that needs support from outside,” she added.
